THE FAIR WEAR FOUNDATION

The Fair Wear Foundation is an independent and non-profit organization that is controlled by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), trade unions and business associations. The FWF aims to improve working conditions and wages for workers in the textile industry. The FWF's focus in the supply chain is on ready-made clothing, i.e. the processing of fabrics into textile products in factories. This is because sewing is one of the most labor-intensive steps in the production process, and working conditions often suffer as a result.

The organization has two main areas of work: on the one hand, regular monitoring, evaluation and public reporting on the progress made by member companies in implementing the FWF's requirements. Part of this review includes inspections of production facilities and factories, as well as interviews with workers on site.on the other hand, the FWF develops and tests new approaches with its members to better enforce human rights in their supply chains.

As the Fair Wear Foundation is a multi-stakeholder initiative with partners such as trade unions, business associations and NGOs, a balanced approach is guaranteed at all levels of the production process. The involvement of local partners in the production countries is also one of the strengths of the FWF, and member companies undertake to enforce the FWF labor guidelines and the FWF Code (based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights and ILO core labor standards) against workers in their supply chains.

FWF code of labor practices

The basis of the cooperation with Fair Wear is the so-called "Code of Labor Practices". This specifies 8 labor guidelines derived from the ILO conventions and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

1 - Free choice of work
2 - Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
3 - No discrimination in the workplace
4 - No exploitation through child labor
5 - Payment of living wages
6 - Reasonable working hours
7 - Safe and healthy working conditions
8 - A legally binding employment relationship

Once a year, each FWF member company publishes a social report or Social Reportwhich provides information on the progress made in implementing the guidelines and any further improvements. In addition, each company is also Brand Performance Check (BPC) are reviewed and evaluated by the FWF on the basis of criteria. The corresponding reports are published by the FWF. The verification process of the independent organization works on three levels and only awards the brands the trustworthy FWF seal after an intensive review.

The organization works closely with a network of NGOs, interest groups and trade unions in the production countries. The FWF now has more than 130 member companies and is primarily active in eleven production countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. These include: Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, India, Indonesia, North Macedonia, Myanmar, Romania, Tunisia, Turkey and Vietnam.

100% fair clothing remains a goal! We are aware that there is no perfect model solution to combat injustice in the workplace, forced labor and discrimination, but we are pleased that together with the FWF and all its members we can work step by step to improve working conditions in the garment industry. Together we can develop innovative solutions and standards to improve the lives of millions of workers!
