Black Friday = Green Weekend

Result of the Green Weekend 2024: €5500 for OroVerde

Thanks to you, we can donate an incredible €5,500 to the Tropical Forest Foundation. OroVerde The project promotes biodiversity and sustainable agriculture in Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic - an important work for the protection of the environment and the preservation of our planet.a huge thank you also to OroVerde for the tireless work and commitment to the rainforest areas and the people living there.let's continue to work together for the rainforest and a sustainable future!

No Black Friday! It's Green Weekend!

Do you also receive countless offers on Black Friday, Black Weekend, Black Week and even Black Month? At IRIEDAILY, sustainability, climate protection and slow fashion are right at the top of our agenda. That's why this year - as in the last five years - we have decided not to take part in the big Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Instead, we are turning Black Friday into Green Weekend* and will once again be supporting the tropical forest foundation OroVerde with 20% of all net sales generated in the online store this weekend! The tropical forest foundation OroVerde (Spanish for "green gold") is actively committed to the preservation of tropical rainforests. Together with local people, they develop long-term conservation projects and thus ensure sustainable rainforest protection. This year, we would like to use our donation to support the "BIOFINCAS" project, which helps small farmers in Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic to expand sustainable cultivation methods, distribute risks more fairly along the value chain and improve the political and economic conditions for biodiversity-friendly cultivation.

We are very happy to support OroVerde again this year and to make a contribution to the preservation of the rainforests. By placing an order on Green Weekend, you are automatically doing something good and supporting an important sustainable project! Thank you!

*The campaign will take place from 29.11.2024 up to and including 02.12.2024.

OroVerde and the BIOFINCAS project for biodiversity and sustainable agriculture in Mexico, Guatemala & the Dominican Republic

We would like to support an important OroVerde project in Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic with the proceeds from this year's Green Weekend. A world in which sustainable agriculture and fair supply chains are the norm instead of the exception - unfortunately, this is still a utopia at the moment. But this is precisely where the BIOFINCAS project comes in, with the aim of promoting sustainable farming methods, distributing risks more fairly along the value chain and optimizing the political and economic framework conditions for biodiversity-friendly agriculture.

The smell of fresh coffee, the taste of chocolate or a ripe banana - many people take these pleasures for granted. However, increasing demand is leading to rainforest clearance, monocultures, the use of chemicals and a dramatic decline in biodiversity. At the same time, extreme weather conditions and unreliable harvests are threatening the livelihoods of many smallholder families.

Sustainable farming methods offer a solution: they protect the rainforest, promote biodiversity and are more resilient to climate risks such as drought and soil erosion. However, switching to such methods is costly and time-consuming and overburdens many producers financially. This is where the BIOFINCAS project comes in to support and promote the transition to sustainable agriculture. To this end, up to 1,000 small farmers in Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic will initially be supported through training in biodiversity-friendly practices, financial literacy and access to climate insurance and loans.

Key factors of the BIOFINCAS project for change

1. capacities and know-howTraining programs and advisory services are offered to support smallholder cooperatives and rural communities in using natural farming methods instead of monocultures and chemicals. In addition, workshops are held to improve financial literacy in order to promote more sustainable business practices.

2. finance and securityIn order to convince small and medium-sized farms to adopt sustainable farming methods, suitable financing options such as specially tailored loans or insurance are required. Through exchanges with financial institutions and insurance providers, suitable financial and insurance solutions will be developed, tested and widely applied to enable the transition to biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient practices.

3. awareness-raising and political frameworkRecommendations are developed for better political framework conditions that promote sustainable agriculture and make value chains fairer. In addition, campaigns are used to raise awareness among consumers in Germany and the EU as well as trade players on national and international platforms.

past support campaigns

We have already collected money for OroVerde six times to support various projects. The first support campaign ran for two weeks in September 2019. 2000 new trees were planted and 2.5 hectares of forest gardens were created in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Guatemala. You can find more information here!

The second campaign was the Green Weekend 2019, which we used to support the project "Planting activities and environmental education in the Cerbatana mountains" in Paria, Venezuela. The money was used to pay a scientist for 13 days to record rare animal and plant species in one of the mountain cloud forests. With this data, OroVerde was able to develop a conservation concept for the area and draw attention to endangered species. In addition to measures such as planting trees, environmental education and cultivating forest gardens, this is essential work in order to recognize emerging damage early enough and initiate countermeasures.

The third support campaign was the Green Weekend 2020, with which we supported the project in the Bocas del Polochic biosphere reserve in Guatemala. The to-do list there includes forest protection and reforestation, the introduction of sustainable agricultural methods such as beekeeping or agroforestry systems, improved living conditions, e.g. through health and cooking courses, water filters or good cooking stoves, as well as disaster prevention.

With the Green Weekend 2021, we supported important projects in rural communities in Guatemala and Cuba. The aim there is to sustainably improve people's inadequate or insecure food situation by introducing sustainable agricultural practices and using traditional local seeds. The focus is on families as well as local youth groups and schoolchildren. In combination with other solutions such as home gardens and agroforestry systems, monocultures on fields are avoided, which means that local families do not have to clear new areas of rainforest.

In the last two years, the proceeds from the Green Weekend went to the project to save the mangrove forests in Honduras. The mangrove forests on the Pacific coast of Honduras, one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems, are severely threatened by waste, deforestation and aquaculture. These "super plants" protect coasts from erosion and store large amounts of carbon dioxide, but also provide a habitat for numerous animal species. Fish and mussels are dying in the Gulf of Fonseca, while the mangroves are increasingly being destroyed. Together with CODDEFFAGOLF, OroVerde is supporting the protection of this unique ecosystem. Protection measures include Reforestation and preservation of the mangrove forests, taking water samples and evaluating the data, waste systems and information campaigns against environmental pollution and a monitoring system for 3000 hectares of mangrove forest.
